Books
Some books I’ve read lately…
The Daughters of Juarez by Teresa Rodriguez: a very sad book, but eye opening as well. So many young women have died horribly in and around Juarez and the officials in Mexico just don’t care. Sure we have miscarriages of justice in America, but nothing on this scale. The author is a reporter with Univision and she does a good job showing how little the police & officials have done to solve any of the hundreds of cases. [You can get a quick recap of the "femicides" from wikipedia]
Lighter fare…
Mr. Darcy’s Diary by Amanda Grange: if you are a P&P fan like me, you will thoroughly enjoy this book. It’s Mr. Darcy’s diary (obviously), which is delightful to follow. Each entry is tied to an event in the original and is amusingly captured in Darcy’s voice by the author. She does a great job fleshing out Darcy and making each entry sound true to the character *I* have always pictured when reading P&P. Highly recommended!
The Queen’s Fool by Phillippa Gregory. Philippa Gregory is quite the rage right now (one of her other novels is currently being made into a movie with Scarlett Johannsen & Natalie Portman) so I thought I’d try one of her books. Her settings and historical research are phenomenal. The story is complicated and wanders over many years, but ends fairly well. While I felt a bit like she gave up on the heroine at the end, I’ll still be keeping an eye out for some of her other novels.
